Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral mined in
Canada, Eastern Europe and the United States. Asbestos fibers
are long narrow and bind with materials often used in
construction and fireproofing. Any materials containing
more than 1% asbestos is considered to be an asbestos
containing material.
Asbestos is typically found in buildings built between 1920
and 1978. Products such as pipe insulation, ceiling tiles,
plasters, vinyl flooring, spray on insulations and textures
often contain asbestos.
Asbestos is harmless when the material is in good condition
and left undisturbed. Asbestos must be inhaled to
cause a health threat. The fibers, which can be as
much as 1200 times smaller that a strand of hair, are known to
be cancer causing. They can lead to
asbestosis (formation of scar tissue in the lungs from
inhalation), mesothelioma (cancer of the chest and stomach)
and lung cancer. These diseases are mainly attributed to
occupational exposure.
